How to Create a PDF

All submissions to Cultural Anthropology must be in the PDF document format. Specific instructions for creating PDFs are below. If your specific operating system or program is not listed, and you need assistance creating a PDF, please send an email to ea@culanth.org and we will try our best to help you.

 

Mac OS X

Macintosh users are in luck. The OS X operating system has a PDF converter built in to the print dialog, making it very easy to create a PDF, regardless of what program you are using. To create a PDF on a Mac, in any program:

  1. Go to File > Print.
  2. Click the PDF button on the bottom left of the print dialog box.
  3. Select Save As PDF.
  4. Clear out any identifying information under the Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords dialog boxes to ensure a blind review.
  5. Choose a location to save your PDF file.

 

Microsoft Windows with Adobe Acrobat

Windows users with Adobe Acrobat installed can also create PDFs from the print dialog. From any program:

  1. Go to File > Print.
  2. Select the PDF Writer printer from the dropdown list of printers.
  3. Click Print.
  4. If you are given the option to modify metadata (title, author, etc) make sure no identifying information is present.
  5. Choose a location to save your PDF file.

 

Microsoft Windows Without Adobe Acrobat, Using Microsoft Word 2007

If you are using Microsoft Word 2007 to create your document, Microsoft provides a free plugin to allow you to create PDFs. You will need to download the plugin from here:

Once the plugin is installed, follow these instructions to create a PDF from within Microsoft Word 2007:

  1. Click on the File or Office menu and select Save or Publish to PDF.
  2. If you are given the option to modify metadata (title, author, etc) make sure no identifying information is present.
  3. Choose a location to save your PDF file.

 

Any Operating System, Using OpenOffice.org

OpenOffice provides a built-in mechanism for exporting to PDF. With your document open:

  1. Go to File > Export as PDF.
  2. Click Export.
  3. Choose a location to save your PDF file.
