Meeting Notes from 2011 AAA Meetings

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to send some notes from the various meetings and conversations had at the AAA Meetings. For those who attended, it was a pleasure meeting with you. For those who did not attend, I look forward to catching up with you in the coming weeks. I'll be holding an informational conference call on Monday November 29th at 11am EST to go over, in more depth, what the intern program is all about and what's in store for 2011. This will mostly be a review of information from the meetings in New Orleans. If you plan on being on this call, please RSVP with your skype name. If this time does not work for you, please propose an alternative time on Wednesday 12/1 or Thursday 12/2.

For those of you who are new to the program, you should familiarize yourself with the following sections:
* Editorial Intern Program: http://culanth.org/?q=node/77
*Theme (http://culanth.org/?q=node/43

) and Area (http://culanth.org/?q=node/44) Lists
* Virtual Issues: http://culanth.org/?q=node/331
* Browse some supplemental pages (http://www.culanth.org/?q=node/50 or http://culanth.org/?q=node/356), the SCA Meeting section (http://www.culanth.org/?q=node/335), and Multispecies section (http://www.culanth.org/?q=node/338)

This email contains information on the following topics:

(1) Communication
(2) Proposals for 2011 Virtual Issues
(3) New Name for the Intern Program
(4) Connecting with other websites
(5) Intern profiles
(6) Project ideas

(1) Communication
One of our agenda items was how to make communication better. Although I will continue to use email to make announcements, we would also like to start using a different platform, one which will facilitate more communication between interns. We'll do this through google groups as well as the site discussion forums (if you log into culanth.org you can access this email in our discussion forums: http://culanth.org/?q=forum/370). After creating the google groups, I'll send more detailed notes on how we'll be using the culanth discussion forums and google group.

Also, in addition to checking the CA homepage, you can also get announcements about new content on our website through facebook. So if you haven't found us on facebook yet, do it!

(2) PROPOSALS FOR 2011 VIRTUAL ISSUES
I've already mentioned the desired launch dates for our three virtual issues --- March 15th, September 15th, and November 15th. I'd like to get started on the first virtual issue as soon as possible. We are still looking for a theme for this issue so please let me know if you are interested in collaborating on a virtual issue and your proposed theme. I know some people have expressed interest, and if you are one of those people, now is the time to send me an email with an official proposal.

(3) NEW NAME FOR THE INTERN PROGRAM
We've discussed changing the name of the intern program. The editorial board would like to hear your suggestions.

Some of the suggestions generated at the intern meeting included the following:
Editorial contributor
Digital contributor
Digital Liasion
Editorial Associate
Editorial Fellow

Keep sending in your suggestions and I will submit the list to the board on Wednesday December 1st.

(4) NETWORKING WITH OTHER WEBSITES
At the "Drinks with the Editors" session we talked a lot about the value of linking with other websites. Two of the more concrete reasons to do so would be to 1) let these sites know when we have new content on our site, which would allow them to announce or review it (on their blogs, for example), but also (2) so that we can announce other happenings in the world of anthropology. Please send me a list of websites/blogs/etc that you think CA should be in conversation with, including a contact email if possible

(5) INTERN PROFILES
This has come up before. I'd really like to make our intern profiles a little more robust: http://culanth.org/?q=node/332. I'd like to add 1) photos, 2) research interests, and 3) links to personal websites. Please submit this information to me if you'd like to have it added to our site. The more people who participate in this, the better.

(6) NEW PROJECT IDEAS
In addition to continuing to build supplemental pages and theme lists, we came up with a number of other project ideas. I may have missed some so let me know if there is something that should be added to the list.

(a) Playlists --- asking a group of scholars what they were reading in 1980 or in grad school, similar to the playlist coming out in the February issue

(b) Photo essays --- we'll most likely do a call for these and put them in our proposed "Field Sights" section

(c) Blog posts --- we discussed setting up a section for "Field Notes" where people could post insights, experiences, and questions from the field. We will likely do a call for this as well, perhaps around a question like, "What are three things you wish you knew ahead of time?"

(d) Project profiles --- suggested by Kim Fortun, getting short blurbs from people in the SCA community describing their current projects

(e) Rapid Response and AAA Ethics --- Michelle Stewart mentioned this Rapid Response team (see here, ) might be interesting to interview these people

(e) Interviews --- interviews that focus on current issues or events

(f) Videos --- film events happening at your home universities, lectures, colloquium events, etc

For those who were in attendance, if there is anything that you think I've missed in the above email or anything you'd like me to add, please let me know. And of course, let me know if you have any questions.
More soon!
