Dear David...

Essay Excerpt

I have a couple small points. Basically I am puzzled by the intention of the piece. You write as though familial homosexuals ought to be challenging the whole of American culture - that somehow they are not doing anything different because they do not contest every aspect of family living, but go around like anyone else hoping to fall in love and set up households. But why on earth should they? They do not do what they do in order to contest the concept of culture itself. So your last two paragraphs are absolutely right of course - they fall in with hegemonic cultural discourse, and culture lives! (Of course culture will live whether it is hegemonic or not. Culture lives also in the degree to which things can be stretched and changed.) But that is not of itself an argument for saying nothing has changed. (281)
