Call for Contributions: How Do You Use Ethnographic Media in Your Teaching?

Teaching Tools, the Society for Cultural Anthropology’s pedagogical forum, invites contributions for a new collection.

From assignments to classroom activities and screenings, we are looking for engaging and rigorous ways ethnographic media intersects with teaching anthropology. We know that reading and writing require skill and discipline that we teach our students. What about engaging with films, art projects, zines, or exhibitions? How are these skills cultivated? Teaching Tools is putting together a collection on teaching with ethnographic media, and we are looking for your contributions!

Reflections and contributions could include but are not limited to:

  • How you use specific resources, databases, and libraries of ethnographic media in your teaching
  • Examples of specific in-class activities or assignments and why they work well—what are they, how do they work?
  • How do you grade these kinds of activities? How to put a rubric on a zine or other such creative output?
  • How do you train your students in ethnographic listening and watching alongside their reading and writing?

Please submit an instructive 500-word reflection to tuckm004@newschool.edu by December 6, 2026. Please include links, images, and anything else. We hope this collection will be a lively archive of materials and pedagogical tools to help us bring creativity and media into our classrooms.
