The Protest Affect: Anti-Authoritarian Resistance and the Struggle for Freedom in Georgia

By Mariam Kalandadze

Georgia has witnessed an unprecedented persistence of resistance for more than 600 days against its government’s authoritarian turn and the unraveling of its EU integration following the widely denounced and allegedly rigged parliamentary elections of October 2024. As protest persists across seasons, crackdowns, and intimidation, what becomes most striking is not only the overt political resistance but the dense affective landscape that has taken shape in its interstices: nightmares and anxiety that trace the tremors of an uncertain future; anticipation and anger that surge through crowds; shame(lessness) and indignation that surface in encounters with state violence; mourning and exhaustion that mark suspended political horizons; suspicion and ambivalence that bind, fracture, and unexpectedly reassemble communities. This series asks how such affects endure, regenerate, or arise against the grain, how they continue to sprout under political pressure and polarization, how serendipitous moments of camaraderie materialize among humans and non-humans, and how moral and sonic intimacies flare in times of collective strain. By turning ethnographic attention to these subtle yet powerful affective forms, the curated essays spotlight how Georgia’s resistance is sustained not only through organized mobilization. Instead, it is sustained through the unpredictable, residual, and continually reconstituted affective energies that make protest imaginable and persistent in a time when political categories, communal relations, and futures are being radically reworked.
